Biography

Dr. Debanjan Banerjee has completed his post-graduation (M.D.) and post-doctoral (D.M.) in Geriatric Psychiatry from the esteemed National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore. He has been attached with the Geriatric unit of NIMHANS for over five years before presently practicing as a Consultant Psychiatrist in Kolkata. He specializes in ageing and old age-related mental health problems and has several awards and distinctions to his credit (Gold Medalist in MBBS, Best Student and Psychotherapy in MD, The Gandhi Fellowship Award, ICMR Young Scientist Award, WPA Early Career Fellow, etc.). Dr. Debanjan has presented in several national and international conferences and is actively involved in the training of post-graduates, student-counselling as well as research. He has served as the head of Student Welfare and Training, NIMHANS, Bangalore and has been part of several academic and clinical training committee for the post-graduate psychiatry residents.
He’s the Associate Editor (Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease; Frontiers in Psychiatry), Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Psychosexual Health and Assistant Editor, Indian Journal of Social Psychiatry. His research interests include social psychiatry, stigma, human rights, psychosexual health, old-age psychiatry, psychotherapy, medical misinformation and qualitative research. He is a life-fellow of the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS), Marce Society (Women’s Mental Health) and the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA). Dr.Banerjee is also a member of the Human Sexuality and Old Age Psychiatry Sections, World Psychiatric Association (WPA). He is a regular medical fact-checker and member of Health Analytics Asia (HAA), a pan-Asian network of DATA LEADS responsible for global work on debunking medical misinformation along with GOOGLE NEWS INITIATIVE (GNI). He has been actively involved in research on mental health, psychology of fake news and psychological wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr Debanjan has several publications in peer-reviewed national and international journals and is a columnist for several dailies. He writes extensively for public awareness and pedagogy campaigns.
