Dr. Pumariega has devoted his career to children’s systems of care and cultural diversity in mental health. He is Professor and Chief, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, University of Florida. He received his M.D. from the University of Miami School of Medicine (inducted into its Alumni Hall of Fame in 1999) and residency/fellowship in general/child psychiatry at Duke University. He has headed four divisions of child & adolescent Psychiatry and three departments of psychiatry. He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), Fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists and American Orthopsychiatric Association, and Honorary Fellow of the World Association of Social Psychiatry. He served as associate editor and the editorial boards of 4 scientific journals; and published over 250 scientific publications, 3 edited books, and one co-authored book. His awards include the APA Simon Bolivar Award (2004) and AACAP Jeanne Spurlock Award on Diversity and Culture (2007).
