Biography

Oye Gureje is past President of the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria and of the African Association of Psychiatrists and Allied Professionals. A former member of the Board of the World Psychiatric Association, he currently serves on the Association’s Standing Committee on Science, Education and Research. For several years, he was a member of the WHO International Advisory Group for the Revision of the ICD Chapter on Mental and Behavioural Disorders during which time he was Chair of the Somatic Distress and Dissociative Disorders Work Group, co-Chair of the Field Studies Coordinating Group and Co-Chair of the Cultural Guidance Work Group. He conducts research in global mental health with particular interests in epidemiology, interventional studies, and health system development and strengthening. He has published more than 500 peer-reviewed scientific papers, monographs, book chapters, and co-edited 3 books. Listed among the global highly cited researchers, he has been described as one of the "most influential scientific minds" in the world (https://hcr.clarivate.com). He is a recipient of many awards among which are Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science, Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Medicine, and the Nigerian National Order of Merit (Nigeria’s highest honor for academic achievement).
